http://www.peasepress.com/Images_Japantowns/SF_4blocks_1910_2000.pdf

Awwww, gracias, muchas gracias!

Places that you like very much? I've been to the city 5 times before, so I've done the tourist stuff.

sorry if I misrepresented myself - my family and I are more "local tourists" than anything. But I do know a lot of little things about various places.

have you been to the Ferry Building yet? Great Scharffen Berger chocolate store and some more artisan olive oil / organics/ stuff like that.

by the Sony entertainment center Metreon there's a relatively new Westfield shopping mall. The stores are alright, a bit on the luxury side but still fun to window shop. The Powell Street BART station is inside the mall. But on the top floor is this gorgeous restored rotunda that's all beautiful and huge and airy. The food court's also pretty varied, bit more costly than usual food court stuff but pretty good and healthy if you choose right. There's a Beard Papa there - best cream puffs in the world. The tea place in that food court makes horrible, powdery tapioca pearls.

In Japantown, the Kabuki theater's somewhat more expensive, but has a good selection of independent/foreign films and some of the coolest seating I've ever seen. The theater screen rolls down on a beautiful stage, and there are little tray things you can move near your seat so you have a good, wide place to put your food and drinks.
The Japan Center nearby is cool as well.

Over in the Financial District, around the Federal Reserve and Embarcadero, there's a somewhat hidden (strange, because there's a souvenir shop) place called Rincon Center that used to be a post office. Past all the restored post office stuff is a food court, variable quality but some good stuff and gelato in there. But it all surrounds this giant overhead waterfall that's just amazing. And there are cool little SF history frescoes all around.

In the Presidio, there's the Lucasfilm headquarters. They don't let people inside, I think, but you can take a picture with the Yoda statue outside. I haven't been there, but I know it's a great recreation area, especially Crissy Field.

oh, if you're ever looking for parking around Ghiradelli Square, there's a little open alley by the beach with free parking.

South of Golden Gate Park is the Sunset District. Not much to do there (Lots of Asian stores with a scattering of Irish pubs), but it's probably easier to get to Ocean Beach from there than the more congested area by the Legion of Honor.

oh, and if you're planning on going to museums, and if you have a Bank of America card, you get two free admission tickets to the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, the Museum of the African Diaspora, and the De Young Museum.

don't know if that helps.

Bakeries! I just remembered how San Diego has maybe 2 decent bakeries, but they are nowhere near as good as stuff I've had in other cities. Is there a bakery that does really good bread? I'm not interested in pastries so much as wonderful bread.

I don't know much about the bakeries in the area - we tend to visit on weekends, more like "local tourists" than anything else. But, although it's quite touristy, Boudin Bakery bread (from the giant store between Pier 39 and Ghirardelli Square) is pretty good.

Have a great time.

Weather in the City is above average- probably through Saturday.

It was 100 today here, and I think in the 80's in SF.

Our heat wave is supposedly going to "cool down" a little by Friday-Saturday, but I am thinking it's still going to be in the 90's here, and 70's in SF by this weekend.

100? Yikes! I hope it cools off for you soon. But 70s in SF sounds right about perfect for a spoiled SD person like myself :D
