I have two DW invite codes. Comment here if you want one.

Exams are going pretty good. There all always some troubles, like just losing all I had saved from Zoology, and desperately asking my classmates to send the classes to me. Oh well.

I'm doing a friends cut at lj. I can't keep with a lot right now. (If I de-friend you is because I'm pretty sure I'm just spamming your friend-list by now.)

I actually made most of this vid, um, before I had children.  I finished it because it seemed silly not to do so and because it matched the "worst-case scenario" cliche bingo prompt.  Also, it is ridiculously large for a 3:42 vid (81 M); clearly I'm exporting improperly.

If you saw me in a police car, what would you think I got arrested for?
Answer, then post to your own journal if you want, and see how many crimes you get accused of.

I had a dream last night about J2 and Misha (and this minion' status is: officially batty) I seemed to be at a convention of sorts, only it was happening at my town. Everyone, fans and all three SPN boys were sitting at a table, and a fan was reading a poem for Misha. Misha had gone all emotional at the poem and could barely speak, and instead started singing autographs for everyone. I remember I didn't hand anything to be signed and I felt stupid for it afterwards. After this, i remember grabbing this old, really huge bike so I could follow the guys to the hotel (the hotel they were staying at is actually a local school in RL. WTF) and I got to their hotel and there were fans eeeeverywhere. Like crazy. I have the slightest feeling that I managed to talked to Misha while J2 were with other fangirls but that part is fuzzy.

Clearly this summer hiatus has broken my mind. I shall go check myself into a loony bin now.

The Jack & Ianto video on Russell T Davies' site is making me go so sad all over again. Also, take a look at this image, from Gareth David-Lloyd's website. Awww, guys. I miss the old, good team.

An the random of the day is: link found in Peter Facinelli's twitter: How to get dressed and ready for work in 5 minutes. WTF.

  • Jul. 13th, 2009 at 7:44 PM

Announcing: OTW's GeoCities Rescue Project

  • Jul. 13th, 2009 at 6:41 PM
As we reported earlier this year, GeoCities, which hosts many fannish resource pages and archives, announced that it will be closing down at the end of the year. They've now announced a more specific date: October 26, 2009.

In response, the Open Doors Committee of the OTW would like to announce our GeoCities Rescue Project.

If you are the owner of a fanfiction archive or resource, meta or other fannish page on GeoCities and you are looking to house your fiction or other content, the OTW can help! Open Doors is teaming up with the Archive of Our Own and Fanlore to preserve as much material as possible.
Fanfiction: We're offering AO3 beta accounts to fanfiction authors currently hosted on GeoCities --both single author and multiple author archives are welcome--so that you may preserve your fiction. If you are not the author, owner or site administrator, you can still document and memorialize parts of a fanfiction site on Fanlore, but we need an authorized person for an AO3 account. Contact Open Doors for more information!

Resource sites: If you are the owner of a fannish resource site, we recommend a page in Fanlore with a summary of the information and purpose of the site along with screencaps of the entry page and/or other key pages to convey the feeling of the site. We have volunteers who can help you set up a Fanlore page documenting both the content and feel of a GeoCities page. Even non-owners of a resource site can document and memorialize a site on Fanlore. Contact Open Doors for help or for more information!
For either a fic or a resource site, please include the URL of the site you wish to archive/preserve, and an email address. If you are the administrator of a multi-author site, please include email addresses for each hosted author (if possible).

I'M PRETTY SURE THIS IS MY FAVOURITE GIF IN THE HISTORY OF THE INTERNETS

I LOL'D SO HARD IRL

I needed this, because I sucked a bit at driving today and booo. Though my teacher continues to say I'm good, but I thought I was awesome xDD Also I've been through parts of my city that had no idea where connected. I was like: where am I? how did I get here??? xDD Oh and through one of the busiest streets! And didn't get scared of the other cars! haha.
We skipped trying to find the theme park on Saturday -- because Leyland wouldn't let us leave XD -- let's just say that in general signs were thin on the ground, and thin in the air.

So, Sunday we went out to the theme park when they opened - Becca and I ran around like a couple of 5 year olds high on sugar XD

Right, on with photos. Because there was a joust and ahem. *drools*

Warning: There's a lot of pictures under the cut.

Locus Online News: Charles N. Brown, 1937-2009

This is a great loss for the science fiction world, and all genre fiction. I've been reading Locus since the 1970's.
What a legacy. He started a zine, that evolved into one of the premiere news gathering magazines of the publishing field.

My heart and condolences go out to his family, friends and colleagues, of which he had many.

Back in Mexico, still somewhat exhausted. Seeing Robin on Saturday was amazing, it was such a lovely day, but leaving him again was so hard. I was doing okay in biting back tears yesterday in the plane, and then my Dad thought saying 'aren't you excited about sleeping on your own bed tonight!' was the most sensible comment he could make, and I spent the next hour sobbing my heart out and getting stares from, well, everyone else sitting close.

I miss him so fucking much, and it's six months until I see him again.

CHICOOOOOOS!!!!!

Love and hate

  • Jul. 13th, 2009 at 2:51 PM
As always - it seems - I'm late to the party, but I just need to point out that this is obviously Jared's version of a flashmob. He pops up, attacks and then goes on his merry way, like nothing happened. Thus: textbook case of a flashmob! Ahahaha! This is why flashmobs are so great. ♥
Attack of a Jared. )

On a less happy note, I'll never understand the amount of hate a negativity people hold. I may be annoyingly cheery at times, but I sincerly believe in a half-full glass philosophy and I hardly ever assume people are ill-meaning. I do think a lot of people spend a little too much time online, with people you never meet. Once you've actually talked to someone, preferably face-to-face, it makes all the difference. For instance, sarcasm or irony is very easily misunderstood, some people take everything at face value, leading to huge misunderstandings. For the people who seem to think most people are hateful in fandom, why don't you do something else for a while? Go outside, read a book, talk to your neighbours, breathe in some fresh air! And then come back and be constructive and positive and open minded. MY fandom is a happy place, with nice people who write excellent stories and have interesting things to say. Hate and anger consumes a lot of energy and gives nothing back. If there's anything I hate in fandom, it's small minded anonymous hate/wank. It makes me want to turn in my fandom card forever.

Nice night, slightly cool without a chill.

Listening to Hejira by Joni Mitchell. Still sounds great.

Discovered my Frida DVD has a CD Rom with interesting items on it, must sit down and watch and look!

Watching Trueblood and 24 -- these are two highly addictive shows. On s1 for Trueblood , and s7 for 24...

Did some colorschemes earlier, however, colourlovers is being problematic with my antique internet.

Indulged in some gelato today. Guess Sunday is gelato day.
White chocolate and espresso, my favorite!

Nice day, very slow and lazy, and filled my creative well a little bit.

Bought two magazines, Preservation about historical preservation, and the latest issue of Orion. Just needed a little inspiration, I guess.

I didn't know Dostoevsky wrote a book called House of the Dead

That title. That's the video game that is in EVERY arcade and I always looked at it but rarely played it because shooting games cost more tokens than other games.

random connections.

to me, Lists of Bests is even more addictive than TV Tropes.

I have 57 lists and I check others to see if they're good. The minimum number of items for a list to interest me is 50. I prefer combing through the 100+ and 1000+ lists, though. So many things to check. I keep two library tabs open to check titles and their availability.

The thing is, you mark your progress. I keep on checking the top of each new page when I'm combing through lists, hoping that I've moved up just one more percent. I'm no completist; I only consume that what interests me. But it's nice to see the percentages go up on the lists I choose.

I tend to go with the more official-looking lists, though.

Lists that might be of interest to you:
Pratchett Discworld Novels
Wizard Magazine's Top 100 Trade Paperbacks (comic book issue collections) of all time

Gay History this next week

  • Jul. 12th, 2009 at 10:08 PM
July 13

July 13, c 100 BC - Caius Julius Caesar is born in Rome. Taunted by the Roman aristocracy throughout his life for being a bottom to Nicomedes King of Bithynia it didn't matter he conquered Gaul. His name around court was "The Queen's Rival." In Rome it was fine to be a buggerer but not the buggeree.

July 13, 1981 - Toronto City council appoints former journalist turned lawyer Arnold Bruner to conduct study into relations between the police and the gay community. The appointment is made five months after the infamous Toronto bathhouse raids.

July 13, 1984 - Brothers debuts as the first television show in the United States with a gay lead character.

July 14

July 14, 1454 - Angelo Poliziano was born in Montepulciano, Tuscany. He wrote under the name "Politian" and was considered the successor to Ovid. He was tutor to the children of Lorenzo de Medici. Young men flocked from throughout Europe to study under him. And, it wasn't just poetry they were studying. He died at 42 of a heart attack in bed with one of his students.

July 15

July 15, 1865 - James Miranda Barry died in Kensal Green, England. It was only on his death that it was discovered Barry was a woman. For 40 years she was an officer and surgeon in the British Army in Canada and South Africa. With no one knowing it Barry was the first woman doctor in Canada.

July 16

July 16, 110 - Antinous was born in Bithynia. The Emperor Hadrian was smitten with him at first glance. Antinous was 15 at the time. From that time on he never left the emperor's side. On a trip to Egypt he drowned in the Nile. Some say it was because of a prophecy that had declared the Hadrian would die unless a sacrifice were made to the river.

July 17

July 17, 1859 - Ernest Rhys is born in London. Rhys was the editor of the Everyman Library a collection that totaled 967 volumes containing the classics. After he retired he wrote his autobiography filled with anecdotes about his gay clique including Oscar Wilde. It still makes for titillating reading.

Issei Sagawa (佐川一政, Sagawa Issei?, born 11 June 1949) is a Japanese man who in 1981 murdered and cannibalized a Dutch woman named Renée Hartevelt. After his release, Sagawa became a food critic for the Japanese magazine Spa.[1]

From Wikipedia (and I wished I wouldn't have clicked that shit)

---
Since I had really not much to do on this sunday, I decided to pay a visit to 4chan. I found there the whole "wikipedia of horror", a list of links to all sorts of entries that are misterious or just disturbing.

There I found out the story of Issei Sagawa, a Japanese man who murdered a Dutch woman and then eat her after having sex with her. The worst part: he became a celebrity after this and gained media attention, becoming a food critic.

What is unbelievable is not the fact that he canibalized another human being, but the fact that he got away with murder and ended up being famous because of it.

I know that Japan is not the best country when being "orthodox" is a rule. In fact, is their sometimes opressing society what turns simple crimes into big time crimes. Also having the worst kind of media, one can expect that simple crimes just go beyond board... what really gets me is that Is no secret I'm working on a graphic novel about a guy who gets a reality show where he keeps on killing people. My main concern on this was "How I make it real? How would my readers believe that a guy can get away with gruesome murders and in fact, be celebrated by their local community??". This seems to be my answer.

Reality is much more mindfucking than fiction, I suppose.

Tetris effect

People who have spent a long time at some repetitive activity before sleep, in particular one that is new to them, may find that it dominates their imagery as they grow drowsy, a tendency dubbed the Tetris effect. This effect has even been observed in amnesiacs who otherwise have no memory of the original activity.[27] When the activity involves moving objects, as in the video game Tetris, the corresponding hypnagogic images too tend to be perceived as moving. The Tetris effect is not confined to visual imagery, but can manifest in other modalities also. For example, Robert Stickgold recounts having experienced the touch of rocks while falling asleep after mountain climbing.[28] This can also occur to people who have travelled on a small boat in rough seas, or swum in waves, shortly before going to bed, and they "feel" the waves as they drift to sleep, or people who have spent the day skiing who continue to "feel snow" under their feet.

Taken from Wikipedia

Wow! the things one learn every single day.
I have this vivid memory of my family and I going to the beach and passing all day long there. Then when I hit the bed on the same night, I remember feeling this sort of watery effect, like I was still being in the water. I also remember my sister telling me the same the second or third time she went to the beach at eight or so. I told her it was natural, but I never knew why it was natural.

Thanks wikipedia, you dispelled my ignorance yet again.

Sort of around, enough to see my flist freak the fuck out about Torchwood (sorry flisters, from what I've read it was quite a shock), then check out the weirdness of an SPN anon hate meme that had me wondering who the hell is Cam and why do people hate her (I'm not asking for details, really!) only to then realize that I don't know about 99% of the people in SPN fandom. It feels like that sometimes.

I'm reading more David Foster Wallace essays, trying to keep up with Infinite Jest and read a few fics here and there. Have not tackled any long fics in the past week, but I have to mention one fic that I really liked that isn't even SPN.

Repent at Leisure by [info]rivkat, a Clark/Lex story that brought back all the best things I associate with the pairing, as presented in my favorite fics in the fandom. Humor and sexy and cleverness and yeah, loved it. Should mention that the story ignores everything that happened after S5, which is a perfect fit for me, since I stopped watching around the time Clark ended up stranded in the North Pole. I don't even remember now why that happened.

Summary: "Maybe I can help you out with something else?" Jim offered, turning on the flirty charm. He didn't lay it on thick; afraid the guy might latch onto one of the second thoughts so obviously racing through his mind and leave him on the curb.

PERO QUÉ BUENÍSIMA PINTA TIENE ESTA TEMPORADA, POR FAVOOOOOOOOOOR

Los bichos contraatacan

  • Jul. 12th, 2009 at 11:56 PM

Bichos

Katherine Moennig y Ian Somerhalder

Olivia Husset

Hallo! I am still alive. I know sometimes, that may be in question, LOL.

Have just returned from a week with my parents which did several things for me: distracted me from Mr B's driving off into the Memphis sunset, allowed me to reconnect with some high school friends that I love dearly and miss terribly, let me do a little bit of job networking, and made me wonder how it is that I am even in any way able to form healthy relationships of any kind because my parents, dear god, my parents. What a hotbed of toxicity that house is. How I grew up remotely normal, I will never know. Mom may not be drinking, but she's still raging. Dad's a pothead. Sister is ... well, she just is. Spoiled and self centered. Whatever. There are reasons I moved 350 miles away and those reasons haven't changed.

Meanwhile Mr. B is settled in to the new Memphis properties and is beginning the arduous task of sorting out the mess the bank made in the last year that they have owned the buildings. Plus our financial partner knows a lot about making money but not so much about operations, so there are some just generally dumb things in place that will be quick wins as soon as he gets them righted. I'll go down and join him probably sometime in September, as soon as he gets the security sorted out - right now it's not really a haven of good citizenry, if you know what I mean.

And I was not sure if I was going to say anything about this part or not, but I guess I sort of have to - with the financials now being as tight as they are, I've canceled my trip to Vividcon. I twisted and poked and prodded the books and the money just isn't there. Not only the outlay for the trip, which was totalling around $800, but I also don't have child care for the week now. IT SUCKS. Also I need to save my vacation to get down to Tennessee every other month at least for a while. Short term sacrifice, long term gain, just keep saying it over and over. I will still get to see the DVDs, although not getting to see my vidder posse is really a huge bumer. :(

I don't wanna go back to work tomorrow, for sure. Not AT ALL.

[info]toestastegood has delivered on a conversation we had awhile ago about Chekov and Kirk developing a functional, non-fuck-buddies relationship, and it's about as wonderful as anything a person could ever ask for.

To The Third Date ; PG-13 ; Kirk/Chekov

"It could be fun, right?" he suggests, though he still hasn't got his head around this whole 'date' thing. He doesn't know if he's ever actually been on an honest-to-god date before: bars and one-night-stands are more his kind of scene, though he gets the impression that that can't be what their wide-eyed ensign is after. In many ways, he'd feel a lot more comfortable if that were it, because if there's one skill he knows he can impress the world with it's what he can do once they hit the bedroom. "What do you even do on dates?"

"You don't fuck him," Bones says sternly, which really isn't the kind of answer that Kirk is looking for.

¡Felicidades, Danly!

I just finished watching The Evil Dead. I thought I could handle all that gore and ugh but guess what? It took me like 3 days to actually finish watching this! The make up and sound effects just made me so UGH... which is why they were like that so hey, they worked! xD I am determined to watch the other two though, so let's see how long it takes me xD

every time I run away from you

In my dream, there were a lot of things, but I remember being in a house with family friends and Simon Pegg was there with some people too. We were going over some rules or something in a living room, because we were all sharing the same house. And then there were other things I barely remember, just that it was a brownstone in a city at night.
And then there was a part in a colorful place where I overheard a businessman talking about Taipei being basically tea places. I remember moving through some stores and then ordering hot rose tea at Tea Station.
Some more colorful places, a mall, a bunch of people suffocating themselves with rope and then turning into dolls with those circle eyes that move when you move the head. There was also a zombie-like virus and we had to be careful. I remember going into one clothing store with [info]blumenfeuer and we couldn't close the opening to the store. One teenage girl walked in, and then another teenage girl walked in. We couldn't do anything until we were sure they did/didn't have the zombie virus. [info]blumenfeuer went to talk with one girl in a couch and clothing display, and I tagged along to defend. The other girl sat on a nearby couch. One of the girls started acting weird, and then we had to chase her through the mall. I eventually found her on a desk of a police station crowded with shocked people. They said she wasn't a zombie, she was an extortionist. Who also killed people. Under a bunch of files and papers, I found that I had been too late. She had suffocated herself like the others, and I unwrapped yet another binding of rope to see yet another body turned into a small doll, with those globe eyes that moved as you moved it.

A wolf in a human cloth

Wearing my flesh mask
is only easier to enter you
Wearing my flesh mask
is only easier for devour you

You think you're a hunter?
You think you're a man?
nothing of the sorts
just go zealoth of the flesh!

A wolf in human cloth
the smell of your kin
A wolf in human cloth
the smell of raw skin

Here comes the reaper
sweeping up it's scythe
Lay down your head
no use putting up a fight

Come on, Iago, dare to fight your "friend"
Come on, Iago, dare to fight your king

A wolf in human cloth
The smell of your kin
A wolf in human cloth
the smelll of raw skin

A wolf in human cloth
The smell of your kin
A wolf in human cloth
the smell of raw skin

Oh how I pity you
can't grasp the forces you fight
Oh how I envy you
Ignorance a curse, not your might

My dear Iago, for what is the reason
you don't accept the fact of treason
This Othello is not the guilty hand
is the fact you call yourself a man

A wolf in human cloth
The smell of your kin
A wolf in human cloth
the smell of raw skin

A wolf in human cloth
The smell of your kin
A wolf in human cloth
the smell of raw skin

A wolf in human cloth
(I will no longer be your crutch)
A wolf in human cloth
(I will no longer be, just no more)

----
Something happened to me. Something real bad and good.
I fought off my Shadow. I gained my Persona.
I know realize of this, my commitment to not go back again.

Just fuck off Iago. Just fuck off.
